Best Scenic Train Journeys in 2026: Beautiful Rail Routes, Train Passes & Trip Ideas Worth Booking

Last Updated on June 12, 2026 by Jeremy

Flying may be faster on paper, but many travelers are discovering that getting from Point A to Point B isn’t always the most memorable part of a trip. Some of the world’s most spectacular landscapes are only fully appreciated from the window of a train winding through mountains, hugging coastlines, or crossing remote countryside that most visitors never see.

As travel demand continues to grow in 2026, scenic rail journeys are becoming one of the smartest ways to explore multiple destinations while avoiding airport lines, baggage restrictions, and the stress of constantly changing hotels. Whether you’re planning a European rail adventure, a Japanese bullet train itinerary, or a once-in-a-lifetime luxury rail vacation, these routes deserve a place on your travel shortlist.

Scenic train journey through dramatic mountain landscapes

Quick Answer: The best scenic train journeys in 2026 include Switzerland’s Glacier Express and Bernina Express, Japan’s Shinkansen routes, Norway’s Bergen Railway, Canada’s Rocky Mountaineer, Sri Lanka’s coastal railways, and several luxury train experiences across Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Why Scenic Rail Travel Is Making A Comeback In 2026

For years, airlines dominated international travel planning. Today, many travelers are discovering that trains offer something flights simply cannot: the journey itself becomes part of the experience.

Modern rail networks provide city-center arrivals, larger seating areas, easier luggage handling, and uninterrupted views of landscapes that disappear beneath airplane clouds. Rail travel also allows travelers to slow down and experience destinations between major tourist hubs.

Another major factor is flexibility. Many rail systems now offer digital tickets, regional passes, and easy multi-country connections that make trip planning far simpler than it was just a few years ago.

Oh wow, a post after my own heart. We don’t have trains that run properly in this country anymore, and I used to love going on trips through the mountains and the tunnels when I was younger. Also traveling by train is a wonderful way to see the country, as when you are driving yourself you are concentrating on the road and miss out on so much of the country side.

I would love to go on The Glacier Express as Switzerland is one country that I would love to see.

The other one I have to try is the Sri Lanka Coastal Railway. I am not looking for high speed, just a journey full of beautiful landscapes.  Do most of these trains have compartments to sleep in or are most of them day trips?

Michel, I think that’s one of the reasons train travel has such a loyal following. You’re able to sit back and actually experience the journey instead of focusing on traffic, directions, or the next turn.

The Glacier Express is definitely one that’s high on many travelers’ lists. The scenery through the Swiss Alps is spectacular, especially if you’re someone who enjoys mountains and slower-paced travel.

As for sleeping accommodations, it varies quite a bit. Some of the longer routes around the world offer sleeper cabins ranging from basic berths to luxury private suites. Others, including several scenic rail journeys, are primarily designed as daytime experiences where the scenery is the main attraction.

The Sri Lanka Coastal Railway is largely a daytime journey, but that’s part of what makes it so memorable. You’re not rushing to get somewhere. You’re watching the coastline, villages, beaches, and countryside roll past your window for hours at a time. For many travelers, that’s the entire point.

    Hi Jeremy,

I really love scenic train journey but I have gone only one time. I enjoyed this read. I love how you highlighted the beauty of slow travel through these scenic train routes however I would like to trave with my family. The way you described each journey made it easy to picture the landscapes and the experience that trains offer. I also liked the mix of luxury routes and affordable day journeys.  I’m curious how early people usually need to book these popular routes, especially the ones in Switzerland because I would love to visit Switzerland one day?

Shafna, Switzerland is definitely one of those places where booking early is worth it, especially during the summer months and peak holiday seasons.

For some of the most popular scenic routes, I’d try to book several months in advance if your travel dates are fixed. That gives you the best choice of seats and travel times.

And I think a scenic train journey is a wonderful family experience. Everyone gets to enjoy the scenery together without worrying about driving, which makes the journey just as memorable as the destination.
